Rear Admiral Daniel V. MacInnis


Rear Adm. Dan MacInnis graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering in May 1986. Upon graduation, he was commissioned an ensign as an engineering duty officer and completed a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland. He also holds a Master of Science in Engineering and Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Upon completion of Surface Warfare Officer School, MacInnis reported aboard the USS Dixon (AS-37) in Pt. Loma, California, where he served as division officer for the Repair Quality, Repair Services and Outside Machinery Repair Divisions. He also served as diving officer following Navy SCUBA diver qualification. While aboard USS Dixon, MacInnis earned his surface warfare officer designation and qualified as officer of the deck (in port and at sea), and command duty officer.

MacInnis transitioned to naval aviation where he received flight instruction in T-34C Mentor, T-2 Buckeye and TA-4J Skyhawk aircraft. Upon completion of active duty service, MacInnis joined the Navy Reserve (NR), affiliating with the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Reserve Program (NRP) in 1993 as an aeronautical engineering duty officer.

In 2006, MacInnis deployed as officer in charge of Tigershark Det. 1 in Habbaniya, Iraq, where his detachment provided thousands of hours of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) for Naval Special Warfare Command and Marine Forces in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. MacInnis deployed again in 2013 to Afghanistan in as officer in charge of the Persistent Ground Surveillance System, a network of over 40 aerostats providing force protection and ISR to forward operating bases throughout Afghanistan.

MacInnis’s command tours include NR NAVAIR SPECOPS Rapid Acquisition Force (RAF) where he was instrumental in standing up the NRP Rapid Research and Development Mission Area. Under his leadership, the unit earned the Rear Adm. Hugh Smith Award NRP Reserve Unit of the Year in 2011. MacInnis also commanded NR Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD), and is currently the director, Naval Air Systems Command Reserve Program.

Decorations include the Navy Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards) and various other personal, unit, and sea service awards.
